Our Featured Adoptable German Shepherd Dog

Max needs a forever family.Mr. Max

Mr. Max is a nice 3 year old black & tan GSD that has been in FL since the end of March and has grown new fur (really fuzz) on most his body. His skin has turned from the black that it was in TN when he was picked up to the red that it was when we got him the end of March to a normal color now. Max is now on a combination of raw meat and a no wheat, corn, or soy kibble with raw chicken 1/4 for breakfast and 1/2 pound of raw beef mixed in his dinner. He has been receiving medicated bath and conditioner every 3 to 4 days with Zymox products that work on both yeast (which is most of his problem) and bacteria that is often secondary to the yeast. We have also been using the Zymox ear meds to clear up the heavy yeast that was in his ears.

Mr. Max is a very sweet boy with an excellent temperament and will make someone a wonderful companion.  Max has been wonderful here, loves to play with the other dogs, became the guardian of the puppy that was in rescue and loves our grandkids when they are playing with him. He is great with other dogs and even with cats! (In his temporary foster home, before coming to Florida, Max did fine with their TWENTY cats and 5 other German Shepherds!)

Mr. Max was originally rescued in Feb from an owner in Tennessee who had neglected him. He had skin allergies, was malnourished and behind on all his shots. When the good Samaritans rescued him, the owner was just going to have him put down because Max was so sick he had no hair from the middle of his back down to his tail.

Everything was looking up for Mr. Max when unfortunately 2 of the good Samaritans' 3 resident dogs became quite jealous of the newcomer and decided that he was not welcome, so poor Max moved to Florida to find a new home that can give him the TLC he deserves.  Now FOLLOW ALONG WITH HIS TRANSFORMATION into a healthy handsome boy!

Our Mission and Objective

To find loving forever homes for adoptable German Shepherd Dogs placed in shelters, strays and owner turn-ins.  Provide needed medical care, training and rehabilitation to neglected, abused or sick German Shepherd Dogs until they are ready for adoption.

Goals

  • Lower the number of unnecessary euthanasia of healthy, adoptable pets.
  • Inform and educate about responsible humane treatment of animals and the importance of spay/neuter procedures.
  • Bring attention to the plight of shelter pets in animal control facilities.
  • Work toward insuring law enforcement agencies prosecute to the fullest extent of the law, persons found guilty of cruelty and inhumane treatment of animals.

Who We Are

The TBGSR is an all volunteer non-profit pet rescue organization for German Shepherd Dogs. We are supported by private donations, adoption fees, fund raisers and bequests from individuals and businesses. All of our pets are spayed/neutered prior to adoption. They are up-to-date on all vaccinations and heartworm negative. We are dedicated to helping our adoptable animals find good homes where they will be safe, well cared for and loved for the rest of their lives. Caring for these animals allows us to learn more about their personalities and helps us to place them in a home best suited for them.

Volunteering

Tampa Bay German Shepherd Rescue welcomes volunteers.  If you are a fan of the GSD, we need your help.  Please contact us & let us know how you'd like to assist us.

Fostering a GSD

We are always in the need of foster homes to house dogs that are going though medical care while getting them ready for adoption.   The more wonderful families willing to foster a dog, the more wonderful German Shepherds we can save.

Also when our shelter is full, this means we have to turn down worthy candidates and can not pull dogs from shelters because space is at such a premium.  All dogs are spayed/neutered, wormed, treated for fleas, vaccinated and on Thank you for supporting Tampa Bay GSD Rescue! heartworm preventative. We provide a crate, leash, collars and food.

If you have some time, a little patience and alot of love to spare, we need you to help make these guys good adoptable pets.  PLEASE EMAIL US  for more info.

Owner Surrender Policy

Due in part to the current real estate market and foreclosure crisis, Tampa Bay GSD Rescue has been filled beyond capacity. However, we would be happy to help you re-home an animal in need by offering a courtesy post on Petfinder. (Your dog must MEET OUR REQUIREMENTS - be spayed or neutered and have a sound temperament).

If you are willing to continue caring for your pet until a suitable new home can be found, Please Email Us and DO NOT WAIT UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE.  We'd be happy to help. It is preferable to seeing good dogs be unnecessarily put down in the shelters due to space considerations.

If you are unable to care for your dog please contact us ASAP. If space is available we will take your dog in.  We frequently have a waiting list of dogs to come in as space is available.   (Dogs here do not live in cages like public shelters but have play yards to spend their days in or are in foster homes when available.)

Tampa Bay German Shepherd Rescue wants to help and will try to work with you. Please keep in mind that shelter dogs and emergencies (owner death, medical problems, etc) have first priority; then owner turn-ins.   We realize how difficult the decision to re-home your dog is but remind you to please do what is best for your dog.

The German Shepherd Dog (GSD) is a wonderful breed, but it is a "high maintenance" animal not suited for everyone. If you are unfamiliar with our favorite breed, please take the time to educate yourself about it. You can start right here by reading the following.

"Top 10 Reasons
Why a German Shepherd Dog
May Not be the Dog for You"

  1. German Shepherds require a serious commitment. Many of the dogs that come to rescue organizations have no training. It is important that the new family puts time and effort into training their rescue dog.

  2. These dogs have a high energy level. The very energy that allows these dogs to be police, search, guide and herding dogs is often the reason these dogs are surrendered. If you’re looking for a couch potato you may want to consider a different breed.

  3. German Shepherds are highly intelligent. If they are not given a job to do they will often come up with their own.

  4. Like any dog, the German Shepherd is a social animal and needs to be part of a family. The loyalty that endears this breed to many requires that it not be banished to the backyard.

  5. German Shepherds are large dogs. The number one reason given by people surrendering German Shepherds is moving. Usually apartments do not welcome these dogs. If you don’t know where you will be a few years down the line it is not the right time to adopt.

  6. These dogs shed non-stop.

  7. They can be vocal, often whining and barking to communicate. If left alone for prolonged periods of time they may become problem barkers.

  8. If you don’t like doggy smell, consider a different breed. Also, bathing can be challenging due to the dog’s water-resistant outer coat.

  9. A German Shepherd must respect its owner. This is not accomplished by heavy-handedness; it is only achieved when its owner treats the dog with equal respect.

  10. These dogs originated as herding dogs. It is a heritage they carry still. Keep this in mind if you or your neighbors have livestock. Remember that in the state of California a dog harassing livestock may be shot.
